What Type of Paper is Ideal for Printing Junk Journal Pages?
Junk journaling is a popular crafting hobby that involves creating unique journals using a variety of materials. One essential component of a junk journal is the paper used to fill its pages. Choosing the right paper for your junk journal can make all the difference in the final result, so it's important to choose carefully. In this blog post, we will discuss the best type of paper to use when printing your junk journal papers.

First and foremost, it's important to consider the weight and thickness of the paper. Junk journaling typically involves layering and collaging multiple papers together, so you'll want a paper that can withstand the weight and hold up to the glue and other adhesives. A heavier weight paper, such as cardstock or watercolor paper, is a good choice as it will provide the necessary sturdiness and durability.

When it comes to the finish of the paper, you have a few options. Matte paper is a popular choice for junk journaling as it doesn't have a glossy coating, which can make it easier to adhere to other papers and materials. However, if you prefer a more polished look, a semi-gloss or glossy paper may be a good choice.

Here is my favorite type of paper to print my fussy cut ephemera - Neenah 65lb Cardstock

Finally, consider the printer you'll be using to print your papers. If you have a high-quality inkjet printer, you'll want to choose a paper that is compatible with inkjet printers. Similarly, if you have a laser printer, choose a paper that is designed for use with laser printers.

In summary, the best type of paper to use when printing your junk journal papers should be heavy enough to withstand layering and collaging, have a finish that is easy to adhere to other materials, be available in a neutral or colored option, and compatible with your printer type. By considering these factors, you can create a beautiful and durable junk journal that will be cherished for years to come.

How to Make Christmas Junk Journal Clusters

Friday, November 4, 2022

Hello everyone!  I hope you are doing well.

It's time to roll out the festive Christmas crafts! Today I created some cute little Christmas junk journal clusters. I created these darling little junk journal clusters using junk journal printables from my shop, Calico Collage. These junk journal clusters feature my newest junk journal printable, Christmas Doors. I love how simple these are to make, so let's dive right in to this tutorial on how to make Christmas junk journal clusters.

How to Make Christmas Junk Journal Clusters.

Here is what I used to create these cute little Christmas junk journal clusters.

Christmas Doors Junk Journal Printables (I printed out the next to smallest size)
Fussy Cut Christmas Ephemera Labels Junk Journal Printables
Christmas Holiday Sheet Music Junk Journal Printables
Lace
Tea bag envelope
Distress Ink in Antique Linen
Tattered Angel's Glitter Mist in Dazzling Diamonds
Glue (Aleene's Tacky Glue)

I printed the Christmas Doors and Christmas Labels junk journal printable on 65lb (176gsm) cardstock.  The sheet of Christmas Holiday Sheet Music I printed on 24lb (90gsm) paper.

I then fussy cut the Christmas doors and Christmas ephemera labels and then gathered scrap papers, tea bags, and lace.

Once I had everything I needed, I arranged my clusters on the Christmas Holiday Sheet Music as I wanted and then glued them down to the Christmas Holiday Sheet Music.

I let the clusters completely dry.  I placed a few heavy books on the clusters to ensure that they dried flat.

I ripped them apart once they were dry.  I did this sloppily to add to the vintage look.  Then ripped them a little more to make them smaller.  When you do this, it is up to you how much of the back paper you want showing.

I then inked the edges with the Distress Ink.

Then I sprayed them lightly with Tattered Angels. A small amount goes a long way! I think the hint of glitter makes them really stand out.

And there you have it! That is how I created these cute little Christmas junk journal clusters.

Shabby Chic Valentines

Hello everyone, today I'd like to show off some amazing projects from the Calico Collage fan group's creative ladies.  I published the new Layered Heart Cards earlier this month, and so many people fell in love with them and began creating right away.  I invited several of them to share what they'd made, and they didn't let me down.  Without further ado, please allow me to present you some lovely Shabby Chic Valentines.

Shabby Chic Valentines

The 1st is from Amanda Taylor of World of Muchness

I really love how she added more ephemera such as the paper dolls and topped them with buttons and bows.  So adorable.

Shabby Chic Valentines

2nd is from Joan Brown of The Brown Dragonfly (check out her Instagram as well)

I particularly liked how she incorporated the similar fabrics.  The stitching really add to the cuteness of these cards.

Shabby Chic Valentines

3rd we have Katherine Hawkes of Hennies Pennies

Her use of ephemera behind the sayings was a fantastic idea, as was the way she softened the edges with ink and rounded the corners.

Shabby Chic Valentines

Lastly we have Linda Israel of Linda Israel Art

Her collage technique, combined with her sewed edges and ribbon, completely transforms these cards.

Sunny Mornings Junk Journal Folio

Monday, May 25, 2020

Hello crafty people!  I'm here to showcase another design team member's beautiful project.  This one comes from Angela Kerr.  She created another fabulous folio, this time using the Sunny Mornings Folio kit along with some extra elements from the junk journal kit.

Junk Journal Folio Kit

What I love most about this journal is that Angela mashed up elements from the junk journal kit and the folio kit to create a unique chunky small junk journal kit.

To create this adorable Junk Journal Folio she used a mixed of different elements from the kits below.

Here is a close up of the front of the folio.  She made a little pick a boo cover that shows off the little monarch butterfly.

Here you can see a few of the pages were she collaged to create a more unique textured look.

One Fine Day Junk Journal

Tuesday, March 31, 2020

Hello everyone.  Today I would like to share with you another Design Team member's project for the month of March.  This time this project is from Rosemary Roca.

She created a beautiful journal using the One Fine Day Junk Journal Kit & matching add ons.

One of the things I love about this journal is the cover!  She used the matching faux stamps to create the unique journal cover and then adorned it with jewels.  Who doesn't love a little sparkle on their journals?

When you 1st open the journal you will see a library pocket & tag where you could a sentiment if you were going to give the journal away or simply write your name & date for when you start to write in this journal.

Some of the page's edges are adorned with cute vintage style fabric & stitches, which I feel ads the right amount of texture to the journal.

She also stamped on some of the pages with flowers & butterflies which add to the uniqueness of the journal.  You will also find loads of tuck spots with plenty of journaling cards.  In the back of the journal, you will find an envelope full of more ephemera for the buyer to add to the journal as they see fit.

The One Fine Day Printable Journal Kit Includes 21 Printables Pages:
     2 Cover Pages
     14 Full Page Sets
     6 Element Sheets.

     Bingo Cards
     Flashcards
     Tickets

One Fine Day Junk Journal Folio

Monday, March 23, 2020

Hello everyone!  I hope that you are having a wonderful day & staying safe during this time.

Today I would love to share a project from one of my design team members, Angela Kerr.
I reached out to Angela a while back after seeing her beautiful creations on her Instagram account asking her if she would be interested in working with my newest printable folio kit that I created to match the "One Fine Day" collection.  I was so pleased when she said yes.

The printable folio kit includes 5 printable pages with enough ephemera to create 1 junk journal folio.

The cover folds to include a "spine" and has a tri-fold folio closure that you could could attach a magnet, button or ribbon (like Angela did with her folio) to secure the journal shut.

This printable junk journal folio kit includes:
     1 Folio cover
     1 Small Folder/Booklet
     1 Double Layered Tag
     1 Tuck Spot Pockets
     28 Tiny Ephemera
1 Full Page Pattern Paper to Print on the back of the Folio.

I really like how Angela used lace, buttons, layering and unique stitching to make this folio more unique.

I really adore the adorable altered clothes pin by using one of the small circle ephemera in kit.

I hope that you will take a moment and check out Angela's Instagram account and give her a follow. You will not be disappointed! I would call her account pure eyecandy.

Angela has created a flip through of this journal that you can see here!

St. Patrick's Day Loaded Envelope

Thursday, March 5, 2020

Hello everyone, Linda Israel here today.  I would like to share with you a little project a did a few years ago.  I was seeing lots of loaded envelopes on the web and wanted to give it a try.  So here is my St. Patricks's Day Loaded Envelope that I created using Calico Collage's unique "Green Ladies" digital collage sheet.

Here are some of the supplies used in the St Patrick’s Loaded Envelope
ATC Size "Green Ladies" from Calico Collage
Rinea Foil – Gold
Brutus Monroe Jurassic Ink
Large Shamrock Cut on Silhouette Cameo 3
Cricut Explore Air – on Amazon
Cricut Cuts: Circle – Basic Shapes, Flower – Home Decor, Bottom of ribbon from 1st Place Ribbon – Locker Talk. Shamrock was an image I drew the Shamrock and used the Cricut software to convert it to a cut file.
Green card stock – On Amazon
Dymo Label maker with Black Label
Xyron – on Amazon
Ranger Blending Tool – on Amazon
Punch Bunch Flower Punch
McGill Stylus – on Amazon
Fun Foam – on Amazon
Aleene’s Tacky White Glue
Mini Clothes Pins: 7gypsies
Green Seam Binding – on Amazon

Cut the Shamrock Envelope with the Silhouette. For this project, I cut one with the hearts cut out in the front and cut a second Shamrock for the back. Use the Brutus Monroe Jurassic Ink and a Tim Holtz Blending tool to add color around the edges.

Glue the bottom half of the Shamrock but not up into the center just around the lower half with white glue. Don’t use tape, if you do your items will stick to the tape.

Tie a bow with green seam binding. Glue in the center of the shamrock to represent a stem.

Add St Patrick’s Day Altered Paperclips to either side of the St Patrick’s Loaded Envelope.

Pin St Patrick’s Day Lady ATC to the front of the St Patrick’s Loaded Envelope.

Fill the inside of the Shamrock Envelope with Calico Collage St Patrick’s images. Some of the images were mounted on Silhouette Lace Tags and scraps of paper.

Extra Shamrocks were placed inside a green envelope.

Have fun adding other items to fill the St Patricks Loaded Envelope. I even added stickers, some seam binding and extra pieces of paper.

I hope you enjoyed this post on the St Patricks Loaded Envelope!
